Stuck writing your cover letter? Don’t worry, you’re not alone! A cover letter can feel like one of the trickiest parts of a job application, especially when you’re unsure where to start. Fortunately, it’s 2024, and we have tools like ChatGPT that can make this task much easier (and more fun!).

In this blog, I’m going to show you how to use ChatGPT to write a killer cover letter that’s almost guaranteed to land you a job interview.

Why is a cover letter so important?

Think of a cover letter as your personal elevator pitch. Your resume tells what you’ve done, but your cover letter shows why you’re the right person for this particular job. It’s your chance to shine, showcase your personality, and make the reader curious to know more about you.

But how do you make sure your letter perfectly matches the role? Enter ChatGPT! This AI tool can help you not only save time but also craft a letter that fits the job you’re applying for. That is, of course, if you use it correctly.

Step 1: Load the job description - Give ChatGPT the right context

The secret to a great cover letter starts with the job posting. What does the company want? What qualities are they looking for in a candidate? By loading the job description into ChatGPT, the AI can pinpoint exactly what the employer values most.

How does it work?
Copy and paste the full job description into ChatGPT and ask for help. For example: “Help me write a cover letter that matches this job description.” This will ensure that the AI knows what to focus on and tailors your cover letter to meet the employer’s needs.

Prompt idea to use:
“Here is the job description for a Marketing Manager. Can you help me write a cover letter that highlights my digital marketing experience?”

Step 2: Pull out the key points from the job descriptions

You don’t need to cover every detail from the job description in your letter (thankfully!). It’s much more effective to focus on a few key points, such as the required skills and the company culture. Highlight these points and ask ChatGPT to focus specifically on them.

Example prompt:
“Use this job description to highlight my experience in project management and teamwork.”

This way, you clearly show that you have what they’re looking for!

Step 3: Write an irresistible opening paragraph

A good opening line makes the reader want to keep reading. Start with a powerful introduction that immediately shows who you are and why you’re excited about the job.

Pro tip: Give ChatGPT some extra details about your background, like your key experiences or your greatest passion for the field. That way, you get an opener that’s not only strong but also personal.

Example prompt:
“Write an opening paragraph that highlights my passion for project management and my experience leading international teams.”

ChatGPT will make sure your opening grabs attention right away!

Step 4: Pull out the key points from the job descriptions

This is your moment to shine. Connect your relevant work experience to what the employer is looking for in the job posting. Show that your experience fits exactly with what they need.

Example prompt:
“Write a paragraph that links my digital marketing experience to the requirements listed in this job description.”

Pro tip: Use concrete examples, like projects you’ve led or results you’ve achieved. ChatGPT can help you word these experiences beautifully.

Step 5: Does your personality match the company culture?

This part of your cover letter is the perfect opportunity to show how well you fit with the team and the company. Do some research on the company culture (a quick look at their website or social media helps!) and ask ChatGPT to write a section that highlights how your values align with theirs.

Example prompt:
“Write a paragraph explaining how my customer-focused work ethic fits with this company’s values.”

With this approach, you’re showing not only your qualifications but also your fit with the team—gold!

Step 6: End with a strong call to action

Your letter needs to end with a bang. Thank the reader for their time, restate your enthusiasm, and invite them to continue the conversation in an interview. Simple, but effective.

Example prompt:
“Write a closing paragraph that emphasizes my enthusiasm for the role and states that I’d love to discuss my experience further in an interview.”

The perfect closing ensures you’ll stay top of mind.

Step 7: Make the letter personal

While ChatGPT can give you a fantastic starting point, always take the time to tweak the output to match your own style. Add your personal tone and unique experiences. After all, you’re not a robot!

Tip: ChatGPT makes the process easier, but it’s still your letter. Make sure it feels authentic and sounds like you. Add something unique to yourself, like why you want to work at this particular company or how your contributions will make an impact.

Be clear and give chatGPT good instructions

The more specific you are in your questions to ChatGPT, the better the result. Clearly outline what skills, achievements, and qualities you want to highlight, and always provide enough context about the role and company.

Useful prompts to try:

  • "Help me write a cover letter for a Senior Customer Service role, highlighting my 5+ years of experience resolving complex customer issues, training new staff, and developing customer-focused processes. Also emphasize my ability to increase customer satisfaction in a fast-paced, high-volume environment."

  • "Write a cover letter for a Marketing Manager position based on this job description. Focus on my experience leading global digital campaigns, increasing ROI by 30% over the past year, and my strategic collaboration with creative teams. Be sure to emphasize my ability to make data-driven decisions and analyze market trends."

  • "Help me write a cover letter for a Project Management role in the IT sector. Highlight my experience managing large-scale software implementations, leading cross-functional teams of 20+ members, and successfully delivering projects within budget and deadlines. Also, ensure my expertise in Agile methodology and my ability to manage stakeholder relationships is emphasized."

The more specific details and results you provide, the better the AI can help you create a compelling, tailored cover letter.

Mastering the art of cover letters with ChatGPT

Using ChatGPT to write your cover letter can save you a ton of time and help you create a perfectly tailored letter. With the right input—like the job description—ChatGPT can guide you to a letter that fits the role perfectly without losing your personal touch.

But remember: always stay authentic. AI is great for structure and wording, but it’s your personal touch that makes your cover letter truly stand out. Good luck!
